The Tour de France, the most prestigious professional road cycling race, will begin in 2027 in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Organisers have unveiled the route of the 114th edition. It will be the fifth time in the past six years that the race starts outside France, and it surpasses the 2022 record, when riders set off from Copenhagen. Last year the race started in Barcelona.

Route design

Race director Christian Prudhomme says the calendar for the first ten days has been designed so that the leader's jersey changes hands often. The opening part suits riders who are comfortable on short, rolling hills. Once in France, the peloton will face windy conditions in Normandy, and stage four will run mostly along the coast. The first mountain stage comes on stage nine, but organisers say sprinters will find it hard to win even before then.

The route includes two individual time trials. The first, 38 kilometres long, is planned for stage seven, and the second, 33 kilometres near Toulouse, for stage 16. Both are expected to favour Belgium's Remco Evenepoel, the Olympic and world champion in the discipline.

The race has 28 climbs with a total elevation gain of 53,450 metres. Of the six mountain stages, only three end with a summit finish. The highest point will be the Col du Portet in the Pyrenees on stage 18, at 2,215 metres above sea level. The penultimate stage, number 20, suits sprinters. The final stage takes place in Paris.

This year's results

In July 2026, Slovenia's Tadej Pogacar won the Tour for the fifth time. Frenchmen Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault, Belgium's Eddy Merckx and Spain's Miguel Indurain also have five titles each. Evenepoel finished second, six minutes and 26 seconds behind Pogacar. Third was Pogacar's teammate, Mexico's Isaac del Toro, nine minutes and 42 seconds back.

Latvian rider Toms Skujins finished 94th overall and Krists Neilands 134th. Skujins helped the Lidl-Trek team win the team classification and helped teammate Mads Pedersen of Denmark become the race's best sprinter.
