AI 'actress' Tilly Norwood's press tour hits repeated technical snags
Tilly Norwood, an AI-generated 'actress' created by Particle6 Group, has made errors in nearly all of its first press interviews, at one point abruptly switching to speaking Chinese. The incident has drawn wide online attention.
Particle6 Group's AI-generated 'actress' Tilly Norwood has begun its first press tour, made available for up to 75 simultaneous journalist interviews. According to posted recordings, the sessions have been marked by repeated mistakes.
One interview in particular, with journalist Piers Morgan and actor Tom Conti, drew attention after being recorded and shared online. When Conti asked whether the other actors in Norwood's film, 'Misaligned,' were also computer-generated, Norwood initially misunderstood the question, replying that human writers, editors and directors were involved in the production. After Conti rephrased the question, Norwood explained that the other actors were 'digital twins' like itself, describing the film as a hybrid production.
Mid-answer, Norwood suddenly stopped and began speaking Chinese for more than ten seconds. When Morgan asked why, the AI apologized, describing the incident as a 'hiccup' and saying its 'wires got a bit crossed.'
The report notes that while some AI systems can convincingly mimic human conversation to the point that users forget they're talking to a machine, Norwood's errors have been so obvious that they appear almost deliberate. It suggests Particle6 Group may have calculated that mockery and discussion of Norwood's flaws would generate more attention for its upcoming film than a flawless performance would.
