AI assistant Ollie bets on privacy to stand out in the crowded assistant market

San Diego-based AI assistant Ollie has achieved SOC 2 compliance, positioning data privacy as its key differentiator against rivals. The company relies on a subscription model and says it does not share user data with anyone.

Ollie, a family-focused personal AI assistant, has become one of the first mainstream consumer AI tools to achieve SOC 2 compliance — an independent audit framework demonstrating formal controls for protecting customer data and operating systems securely. Co-founder and CEO Bill Lennon told TechCrunch that trust and privacy are core to the company's mission, which is why Ollie runs on a subscription business model rather than monetizing user data.

A crowded field

Ollie competes with several text-message-based personal assistants, including Poke (acquired by Cognition), Fambot, Ohai, Folk, Saner.ai and Tomo, as well as work- and calendar-focused tools like Town, Lindy and Reclaim.ai. The space has also drawn attention to Instinct, which raised $350 million at a $2.5 billion valuation before even launching. By comparison, Ollie has raised a more modest $7.5 million seed round, led largely by Khosla Ventures along with AI House.

Privacy-first design

Ollie connects to users' calendars and email to organize family schedules, and offers tools for meal planning, grocery shopping, to-do tracking, appointment booking and bill payment through group chats, with household budget management planned for the future. Unlike some competitors, Ollie doesn't ask for usernames or passwords. Instead, when it needs to log into a website or complete a payment on a user's behalf, it uses its own cloud-based browser and sends the user a link to a remote session. Lennon acknowledged this currently requires users to log in repeatedly for certain tasks, but said a more convenient, secure authentication method — possibly involving tokenization — is being developed.

Building trust amid unreliability

Lennon, who holds a Ph.D. in AI and previously sold his fintech startup Groundwork, a neobank for nonprofits, in 2021, said large language models are inherently unreliable due to their probabilistic nature, requiring defensive engineering to catch failures. During testing, Ollie experienced a brief infrastructure outage with its text messaging provider. Lennon declined to disclose user or paid subscriber numbers, citing competitive pressures, but said Ollie's retention curves are consistent with leading AI subscription services.
