AI Startup's Tattoo Hiring Stunt Draws Criticism, CEO Admits 'Poor Judgement'

Small AI company LemonLime has been making headlines with unconventional recruitment tactics. The firm, which says it helps businesses adapt existing data for AI use, recently offered interviews to those who scored a perfect 7/7 on its self-designed game “Is it a Lemon or a Lime?” A second, bolder option involved getting a permanent tattoo of the LemonLime logo. As reported by Inc., seven people took the latter offer during a party, leading to immediate backlash online.

CEO Jordan Zietz has since acknowledged the tattoo promotion was a mistake, saying he “messed up” and got “carried away.” However, he has defended the company’s demanding schedule, which he openly promotes. In a LinkedIn post from two weeks ago, Zietz said the entire team works in the office seven days a week. He noted that more than a dozen applicants had withdrawn after saying they were unwilling to work past 5 p.m. or on weekends. He appended “Lol” to that observation.

The startup’s culture appears to blur work and leisure. Employees, according to Zietz, push critical software features into production while watching “Pitch Perfect Sing-Along Edition” at 1 a.m. on a Saturday. Academic credentials are not a priority: Zietz revealed his freshman-year GPA was 2.3. Instead, LemonLime looks for people the team would want as friends, because “changing the world is easier with friends.” The stunt and the subsequent response have sparked discussions about extreme job expectations and the lengths candidates might go to for a foot in the door.
