Discovered Materials, a San Francisco startup that uses artificial intelligence (AI) models to find new substances for advanced chips, has announced a challenge with a total prize pool of $1 million. The company is only months old and took part in the spring 2026 batch of Y Combinator, a prominent startup accelerator. The prizes are offered for solving five open materials science problems that even leading AI models have so far failed to crack.

The five problems

The problems were defined by an advisory group of academics from leading universities around the world. They are:

  • a theory explaining cuprate superconductivity, the ability of certain materials to conduct electricity with zero resistance at ultra-low temperatures;
  • a numerical method to predict the structures of interfaces between silicon and silicon dioxide, a combination found in almost all semiconductors;
  • a numerical method linking grain structure to thermal properties, enabling better heat-dissipation materials;
  • a theory predicting why shining light on materials can change their behavior, particularly in relation to superconductivity;
  • a numerical method to improve Density Functional Theory, a key technique for modeling the structures of atoms and molecules.

Why it matters

Co-founder Advaith Sridhar says problems in materials science are harder to specify than in mathematics, where answers are a clear yes or no. Felipe Jornada, a Stanford professor who helped develop the challenges, said that explaining these phenomena would help shape how electronics, energy storage and future materials are built.

Before announcing the challenge, the company let frontier lab models work autonomously on the problems for several days each, with internet access and other resources. They made little headway. Sridhar stressed that it does not matter who finds the solutions; the problems are meant to serve as goalposts, and tracking efforts will show whether models are improving in this domain.

Discovered Materials focuses on new materials for semiconductors. It partners with major chip companies and also funds its own research. When it announced its seed round in August, Sridhar hoped for a useful material within a year; he now says timelines have shortened and industrially useful materials could arrive sooner.
