Airbnb rolls out AI-powered search and expands social features
Airbnb's fall product update introduces AI-driven property search and expanded social features, alongside new on-ground services. The company is also broadening delivery and rental offerings to compete with hotels.
Airbnb has unveiled its fall product update, expanding the platform in two directions: adding more on-the-ground services for travelers and introducing AI-powered tools for online discovery.
New services
The app, which launched a services feature last year, is gaining additions including meal delivery, laundry, baby gear rental, and ski and boat rental in select locations. Grocery delivery is also being expanded.
AI search
The second major addition is AI search. Airbnb has taken a cautious approach to AI, with CEO Brian Chesky choosing to avoid a chatbot-style interface. Users can now toggle on a feature to search for properties using text or voice prompts. As a search begins, the interface displays dynamic filters based on the user's preferences — for example, typing "baby" prompts additional filters such as cribs, playgrounds, or children's books and toys.
The platform also uses AI to surface relevant property features and lets users compare listings on their wishlist through AI-generated summaries and reviews. Chesky told TechCrunch that building AI search itself isn't difficult, but creating one that doesn't hurt conversion rates is the real challenge for a platform processing $100 billion in transactions.
Social features
Airbnb is also expanding social features designed to encourage more trips and bookings of additional experiences, such as food tastings and craft workshops. Last year, the app introduced the ability for users to connect with fellow travelers and friends. Now, travelers can view a map based on their connections' past or upcoming trips, seeing where those connections stayed and which experiences they booked. Users concerned about privacy can opt out of sharing their trips. Additionally, Airbnb is building neighborhood pages based on guest reviews and other sources to help travelers find places to eat and things to do.
