Sheep farmers helpless against wolf attacks; farms await compensation solution
In recent years, wolves have caused significant financial losses to Latvian sheep farmers, but state compensation is not available for these attacks because wolves are not a protected species from hunting.

Latvian sheep farmers have been suffering considerable financial losses due to wolf attacks in recent years. Beyond the direct economic damage, the issue also affects the mental well-being of livestock breeders. Many farms have been forced to give up sheep farming because of the pressure from wolves.
Despite positive trends in the sector in recent years, sheep farmers feel helpless because no state compensation is provided for the damage caused by wolves. Such payments are only available for losses inflicted by animals that are protected from hunting. Since the wolf is not on that list, farmers receive no financial support. Farms are waiting for a solution to the compensation issue.
