The American actor Selma Blair, 54, was arrested on Sunday at about 11pm at New York's John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) over allegations that she attacked flight attendants on a Delta Air Lines flight from Los Angeles. The FBI is investigating.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the region's airports, said it responded to a call about a physically abusive passenger on Delta flight 938, which was parked at the gate. Blair was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for evaluation. Two flight attendants also reported injuries, and one was taken to hospital. The FBI handles reports of crimes on aircraft.

What media outlets report

Several news outlets reported that Blair allegedly punched one flight attendant, bit another and tried to open the aircraft door. Official statements did not immediately address those details. In an air traffic control recording, the pilot said one flight attendant and one passenger had sustained minor injuries, a bloody nose and bite marks, and that no ambulance was needed but medical personnel should meet the plane at the gate.

A Delta spokesperson said the airline has zero tolerance for unruly or unlawful behavior, and that the arrest did not affect the flight, which landed at JFK ahead of schedule.

Blair's publicist told the Hollywood Reporter that the actor experienced a medical emergency that led to the alleged conduct, received immediate medical attention on landing and is in stable condition.

An earlier incident

It is at least the second time Blair has been reported in such an episode. In 2016, she reportedly began screaming uncontrollably on a flight from Cancún, Mexico, to Los Angeles and was removed on a stretcher. She later apologized, saying she had mixed alcohol with medication.

Blair is known for starring roles in Cruel Intentions, Legally Blonde and Hellboy. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018.
