In Albania’s capital Tirana, on Friday, June 20, 2026, protests took place for the 20th consecutive day against a resort project linked to the family of U.S. President Donald Trump. Since late May, demonstrators have gathered every evening to voice opposition to the luxury hotel, planned for a protected area on the Adriatic coast. The project is associated with Trump’s daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner.

Protesters argue that the $4.6 billion hotel poses a serious risk to the environment and a nearby lagoon critical for migratory birds, including hundreds of flamingos. In addition to environmental concerns, the protests also express dissatisfaction with corruption and demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

During the march through Tirana’s streets, demonstrators waved Albanian flags and chanted slogans such as “Cancel the project,” “Rama, leave,” “Rama non grata,” and “Albania is not for sale.” The crowd also displayed posters of pink flamingos, which have become a symbol of the protest movement.

A smaller protest occurred in late May on Zvernec Island, where a section of the nature reserve designated for the project was fenced off with barbed wire. Videos of bulldozers on the beach and violent confrontations with private security guards spread rapidly online, sparking public outrage.

The European Parliament has called for a moratorium on the project due to environmental concerns. Brussels has warned that the project could slow Albania’s accession to the European Union, one of Rama’s key political goals.

Before Friday’s demonstration, police announced that 27 people have been charged for leading protesters along streets outside pre-approved routes. Last week, 35 people were charged for blocking a highway during protests.
