AMC theaters are gearing up for the release of the new Street Fighter movie with an unusual promotional item: a collectible popcorn bucket shaped like the unmistakable, upright flattop hairstyle of the game character Guile. The bucket can also be worn on the head like a cap.
WWE star Cody Rhodes, who plays Guile in the new film adaptation, showed off the bucket in a social media post.
Part of a wider trend
In recent years, theater chains have leaned into elaborate and quirky collectible popcorn buckets as a way to draw audiences back to the big screen. The trend followed the COVID-19 pandemic, when box office revenue stayed low for a long stretch as many viewers opted to wait for films to arrive on streaming services instead of watching in theaters. A previous example was a Yoshi-shaped bucket tied to the Super Mario movie.
Notably, Guile's original design and hairstyle in the games were reportedly inspired by characters from the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure comic series.
The Street Fighter movie is set to hit theaters on October 16.
