Amnesty International: Iranian Authorities Committed Crimes Against Humanity in Protest Crackdowns
Amnesty International says Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity while suppressing the 2022 protests that left hundreds dead, and that this year's crackdown on new demonstrations followed a similar pattern on an even larger scale.
Amnesty International said on Wednesday that Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity during their crackdown on the 2022 protests, in which hundreds of people were killed.
The human rights organization added that Tehran's response to fresh demonstrations this year showed the "same hallmarks" as the 2022 crackdown, but occurred on an even wider scale.
Speaking to France 24's Mark Owen, Amnesty International's Iran researcher Raha Bahreini called for the creation of an international criminal justice mechanism to prosecute those responsible for the crimes.
Call for International Accountability
Bahreini stressed the need for an international judicial body capable of investigating and prosecuting individuals responsible for the violence and persecution directed at protesters. The call forms part of Amnesty International's broader push for accountability over human rights violations in Iran.
