Analogue Reworks Its Super Nt and Mega Sg Retro Consoles With Wireless and USB-C
Video game hardware maker Analogue has announced the Super Nt Plus and Mega Sg Plus, new retro consoles that play Nintendo and Sega Genesis cartridges. They feature a reworked design, built-in wireless controller support and USB-C power.
Analogue, a US company that makes retro video game consoles, has announced updated versions of its Super Nt and Mega Sg models, called the Super Nt Plus and Mega Sg Plus. The consoles play Nintendo and Sega Genesis cartridges, and the company is offering them with a reworked industrial design and built-in wireless connectivity for controllers and accessories. Preorders open on October 19, and the price is $219.99.
How they work
As with the earlier versions, the new consoles rely on an FPGA processor. It recreates the behavior of Nintendo's and Sega's 16-bit consoles precisely, without using emulation.
Main upgrades
The new consoles do not support 4K output for SNES or Genesis games, unlike the Analogue 3D, which does so for Nintendo 64 titles. The Super Nt Plus and Mega Sg Plus output at 1080p. They add a USB-C port, so the consoles can be powered with the same cables used for phones and mobile devices, plus an extra USB-A port for other peripherals.
Both models include built-in Bluetooth or a low-latency 2.4GHz wireless connection, so gamepads can connect without a separate dongle in a controller port. Wired controllers remain an option. Either console can also be switched on remotely using the gamepad set as the primary controller.
Analogue also says cartridges can now be hot swapped without fully powering down the console: after quitting a game through a menu, the cartridge can be removed and replaced.
Availability
Preorders start on October 19 at 9AM PT (11AM ET). Shipping is expected to begin in December.
