Gaming hardware company Analogue announced two new devices on Friday: the Super Nt+ and the Mega Sg+. They are updated versions of the company's consoles that recreate the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, aimed at fans of early-1990s 16-bit gaming. Each console costs $220, and shipping is planned for December.

Like the earlier Super Nt (2018) and Mega Sg (2019), the new models are built around an FPGA chip. It recreates the original game hardware at the circuit level instead of emulating games in software. This lets players run 16-bit games on a modern TV without lag, but they must use original cartridges. No ROM files are needed.

What is new

The main upgrade is wireless controller support: both consoles have built-in Bluetooth and 2.4GHz connectivity. A dedicated pairing button is included, and the console can be switched on and off from the main controller. Wired controllers remain supported, but no gamepads come in the box. 8BitDo's retro-style M30 and SN30 controllers, which match the Sega and Nintendo looks respectively, cost $30 each.

The consoles add USB-C power and a USB-A port, which can be used to connect CRT displays or charge controllers. There is also an SD card slot, a new operating system and a redesigned case. Cartridges can now be swapped without shutting the console down.

Analogue says each console plays more than 2,200 games, region-free. The Mega Sg+ keeps its Sega CD connector and comes with a Master System adapter. Video output tops out at 1080p, with no 4K support.

Pre-orders on Analogue's website open on Monday, October 19, at 8AM Pacific Time.
