New Operating Systems and Pixel Drop

On Tuesday, Google officially launched Android 17 and its smartwatch counterpart, Wear OS 7. The new versions first arrive on Pixel devices, accompanied by a Pixel Drop that adds extra features.

AI Advancements

Android 17 highlights improved AI models. It includes Lyria 3 for music generation, the multimodal Gemini Omni, and AudioLM speech-to-translation tools for the Pixel 10a. Gemini Omni allows video editing through conversation, while Lyria 3 generates music tracks from text or image prompts.

These changes underscore Google's strategy of using Android and Pixel to showcase its latest AI technology, while rival Apple prepares to release an updated Siri and iOS 27 in September.

Multitasking and Interface Improvements

Android 17 introduces a "bubble bar" — a new UI element that lets users organize and quickly access recent apps at the bottom of the screen, speeding up multi-app workflows. Another feature enables recording with the selfie camera and screen simultaneously to create reaction videos for social media.

Enhanced Sharing and Security

Quick Share file sharing now works with Apple's AirDrop on older Pixel 8a and 9a models. Parental controls are improved with a "Mark as Lost" feature in Find Hub, live threat detection, and screen time limits that can be set with a PIN without a Google account.

Smartwatch and Wear OS Updates

The Pixel Watch gains emergency detection — it automatically contacts emergency services if it detects a car crash, fall, or lack of pulse. Wear OS 7 promises up to 10% longer battery life and multi-step automation. This summer, it will introduce Gemini Intelligence features, including personalized widgets and "Personal Intelligence" by linking Google apps and chat history.
