Transfer rumours in Wednesday's British newspapers centre largely on Manchester United, a club in England's top football division, the Premier League. According to the Daily Mirror, United want to sign Manchester City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri, who is reportedly open to moving to the city rivals when the transfer window opens in January.

More on United

The Daily Star reports that former footballer David Beckham has been backed to become Manchester United's new owner. The same paper says the club have reached out to the representatives of Lennart Karl, a teenager who continues to impress at German club Bayern Munich. It also writes that Russell Martin once emerged as a surprise managerial target for United.

Other stories

The Sun reports that Chelsea defender Aaron Anselmino has been called up by Argentina even though he has not played a game this season. The paper also says Jermain Defoe is set to take a new role at Bromley, a League One club (England's third tier).

In Scotland, the Daily Mail says Martin O'Neill and senior Celtic board members faced "hard but fair" questioning at a meeting with the Greenock Celtic Supporters' Club on Monday night, as the club itself revealed. The Scottish Sun reports a fresh concern for Scotland manager Sebastien Pocognoli: Stephen Welsh was forced off after 23 minutes of Swansea City's match at Portsmouth.

The Daily Mail also writes that the 2027 Asia Cup has been delayed by almost a year because of the ongoing Middle East crisis.
