Manchester United come from 2-0 down to beat Roma and end 10-game winless run

Manchester United beat Italian club Roma at Old Trafford in the Champions League, Europe's top club competition, after trailing 2-0. It was the English side's first win in 10 games and brought some relief to head coach Michael Carrick, whose position had come under heavy scrutiny in recent weeks. The result also improves United's chances of reaching the next phase of the tournament.

The turning point came through a video assistant referee (VAR) decision. Bruno Fernandes had his first penalty saved, but VAR official Carlos del Cerro Grande ruled that Roma's Bryan Cristante had touched the penalty area with his foot too early. The kick was retaken, and Fernandes scored.

Matheus Cunha then netted twice in the final seven minutes. He was sent off shortly afterwards, which made the finish tense, but United held on.

Carrick's reaction

United's first-half display was poor and was criticised by former club players Wayne Rooney and Nicky Butt, who were working on the game for Amazon Prime. Carrick said that at half-time he urged the players to be more positive and not to get too disappointed. In his view, a single moment could change the direction of the game. He denied feeling relief, saying he was mainly pleased for the players.

Wider problems remain

Before kick-off and during the game, fans protested against the club's owners, the Glazer family, minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and director of football Jason Wilcox. BBC recalls that similar comeback wins did not save Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Jose Mourinho from dismissal. Carrick said the next task is an important game against Aston Villa.
