Anthropic Releases Claude Sonnet 5 — Cheaper, More Efficient Model to Cut Enterprise Costs
Anthropic has launched a new AI model, Claude Sonnet 5, offering performance comparable to Opus models at a lower price, specifically for agentic AI tasks, aiming to reduce enterprise spending.

Anthropic has unveiled the latest version of its Claude AI model, named Sonnet 5. Designed to handle queries from both human users and agentic AI, this model aims to address the high costs frequently incurred by enterprises due to massive query volumes.
Sonnet 5 delivers performance similar to Anthropic's recent Opus models but at a reduced price. Starting September 1, the base cost will be $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. Prices will be even lower before that date. In comparison, Opus 4.8 currently costs $4 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens.
The model will be available through Claude Code and the Claude Platform, as well as across all subscription tiers. It will become the default model for Claude's free and Pro plans.
Agentic AI tools generate significantly more queries than humans, often leading enterprises to exceed their token budgets. Sonnet 5 employs a new tokenizer to improve efficiency, helping heavy agentic users reduce costs. While it may not eliminate overspending entirely, it represents a step toward more cost-effective AI operations.
