Anthropic says its workforce has become less junior and spends more time in meetings

AI company Anthropic reports that the share of junior staff in its technical departments has fallen, while meeting time per employee is up 20%. The company says its experience may point to how AI will reshape work organization and hiring.

Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude language model, published a report on Friday describing how its workforce and the nature of its work have changed over the past year. The company argues that its own trends could indicate how AI will affect work organization, hiring and labor demand across the wider economy, since its workflows have been thoroughly built around AI. Other organizations may adopt AI less completely or in a different way.

Fewer junior employees

According to the report, the share of junior-level employees in technical departments has dropped from 21% to 14% since early 2025. The share of junior staff among technical hires fell more sharply, from 27% to 9%. Technical teams now make up 56% of the total workforce, down from 61%. Anthropic attributes this to the natural expansion of business functions as the company grows, and to coding tools that increasingly let non-technical employees build software themselves.

Working with Claude

In a survey conducted in April 2026, 27% of employees said they had become more productive thanks to Claude, while 20% said their job had shifted from doing the work to managing Claude instances. One engineer compared this to babysitting, since each AI agent demands an equal share of attention. The report also suggests that human attention and judgement are becoming a bottleneck for productivity, because Claude generates a large volume of text that must be read and organized.

The company says AI adoption has made it more productive, citing more code per person, more sales closed per representative and more contracts processed. It acknowledges that more code does not necessarily mean better code or greater business impact, but says it has found no signs that code quality is declining.

More meetings

Calendar data show that meeting time per employee is up 20% compared with a year earlier, and up 16% for technical contributors. Anthropic links this to the importance of human trust and accountability, noting that employees repeatedly described face-to-face coordination as indispensable.
