Insurer Data: Most Water-Related Injuries in Latvia Occur at the Seaside

According to insurance company "Balta", over 40% of water-related accident claims happen at sea and its coastline, compared to 25% in lakes and 14% in rivers. Most injuries are not swimming-related but occur during walks, falls, or entering the water.

Data from the insurance company "Balta" shows that the highest number of injuries and accidents near water in Latvia occur at the sea and its coastline, not in lakes or rivers. According to the company's statistics, more than 40% of all claims for accidents on or near water are related to the seaside. Lakes account for 25% of such incidents, and rivers for 14%.

Data from the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) indicates that last year 107 people drowned in Latvia, with nearly nine out of ten tragic cases occurring in natural water bodies. Linda Juhna, head of "Balta" Personal Insurance Claims Management, explains that the higher number of accidents at sea likely reflects its popularity rather than increased danger. Thousands of holidaymakers gather on the coast in summer, raising the risk of various injuries.

Common injuries include cuts on feet from rocks or broken glass, sprains, bruises, and broken fingers. Accidents often happen not while swimming but when entering the water, walking on slippery stones, or relaxing on the shore. One of the most dangerous activities is diving – the insurer has received 56 claims for such accidents over the past three years. The largest payout, exceeding 600 euros, was made to a client who dived into shallow water and suffered a compression fracture of a cervical vertebra.

SPKC data shows that 20 to 30 people suffer severe injuries from head-first dives annually in Latvia, with 90% of victims being men. Accidents peak from June to August, especially in July, when almost one-third of all incidents occur.

"Balta" warns that alcohol consumption and being in or near water are incompatible, as alcohol impairs reaction time, coordination, and risk assessment. As reported, two people drowned on Līgo Day – one in Penkule parish, Dobele district, and another in Grundzāle parish, Smiltene district.
