Code hints that Apple's HomeView smart home hub may get security camera features
A Reddit user found hints in HomeView 27.2 code that Apple's device could work as a security camera. Apple has not announced such features.

A Reddit user going by pdfu has found hints that Apple's HomeView smart home hub may gain security camera features. The clues are buried in the code of HomeView software version 27.2. HomeView is Apple's hub for controlling a smart home, and it cannot currently be used as a security camera.
What the code strings reveal
The strings describe a security camera mode with motion detection, live streaming and recording options, along with privacy functions. According to pdfu, one setup page explicitly states: "Your HomeView can be used as a security camera with HomeKit Secure Video."
Based on this material, only members of the home would be able to view the video feeds. An indicator light would turn on and a sound would play whenever someone is watching the feed or recording begins. Home members would also receive a notification each time the Secure Video settings are changed. Users would be able to customize what the device detects, streams or records depending on whether they are home, away or asleep.
Apple's position
Some users had wondered why Apple did not let HomeView double as a security camera when it launched. The company has said nothing to suggest these features are on the way. The Verge suggests that, given how central privacy is to Apple's marketing, the company may be waiting to fine-tune the features before releasing them.
