Through this combined work of journalists and volunteers, the names of 258,989 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine have so far been identified and documented. The figure reflects only cases that can be proven with available evidence, meaning the true death toll from the war is likely higher.

How it is done

The BBC and Mediazona investigation relies on collecting and carefully checking open-source information, with a broad volunteer network helping to identify and verify each case. This kind of independent tally is one of the few ways the public can obtain reliable information about Russian military losses, since Russian authorities do not publicly disclose precise casualty figures.
