UK Teens Face Overnight Social Media Curfew, but Can Opt Out

The UK government plans to extend its social media ban to 16- and 17-year-olds with an overnight curfew from midnight to 6am, but the measure is not mandatory and teenagers can opt out, raising questions about its effectiveness.

The UK government is extending its social media ban to include 16- and 17-year-olds, imposing an overnight curfew on certain apps. Under the plan, these apps would be blocked by default from midnight to 6am, aiming to reduce online harms.

However, the curfew is not mandatory—teenagers can choose to opt out, which has led to debate over whether the policy will achieve anything. The move follows an existing ban for under-16s.

Annie Kelly discusses the issue with social affairs correspondent Jessica Murray in a video available on YouTube.
