Argentina survive epic Cape Verde scare in extra-time thriller to reach World Cup last 16
Defending champions Argentina edged Cape Verde 3-2 in a dramatic Round of 32 match in Miami, advancing to face Egypt in the last 16.

Thrilling contest in Miami
Argentina overcame a resilient Cape Verde side 3-2 in extra time on Friday evening in Miami to book their place in the World Cup last 16. The match was far from straightforward for the defending champions, who needed an own goal in the 111th minute to secure victory.
Match highlights
Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a clinical finish, but Cape Verde responded brilliantly through Deroy Duarte's stunning strike in the 58th minute to level the score. Lisandro Martinez restored Argentina's lead early in extra time, only for Sidny Lopes Cabral to produce a magnificent long-range equalizer in the 103rd minute. The decisive moment came when Diney Borges deflected Cristian Romero's header into his own net in the 111th minute.
Cape Verde's historic performance
Playing in their first-ever World Cup knockout match, Cape Verde showed no fear against the tournament favourites. Their goalkeeper Vozinha was outstanding, making several crucial saves including from Messi. The Blue Sharks had previously drawn 0-0 with Spain in the group stage, but this performance against Argentina elevated their standing.
