To Build or Not to Build? New Initiative Focuses on Existing Building Resources and Architect Responsibility

The climate crisis and geopolitical instability are prompting a rethink of construction practices, with increasing emphasis on using existing buildings wisely rather than building new ones. An initiative in Latvia calls for evaluating the resources of existing structures and enhancing architect accountability.

Climate change and geopolitical uncertainty are forcing a re-evaluation of the construction industry. The traditional approach of building anew is no longer taken for granted. The question becomes increasingly relevant: is it always necessary to build from scratch, or is it smarter to make use of the buildings that already exist?

Against this backdrop, an initiative has emerged in Latvia that highlights two key aspects: the potential of existing building resources and the professional responsibility of architects. The initiative aims to steer the industry away from a dominance of new construction toward sustainable management of the existing building stock.

While concrete measures have yet to be developed, the idea has already sparked discussions among architects and construction professionals. Emphasis is placed on architects taking greater responsibility for long-term solutions that consider both environmental impact and societal needs.

This initiative is part of a broader trend where the climate crisis and resource conservation become fundamental principles of construction. Although the project is still in its early stages, it already prompts a reconsideration of conventional practices and a search for more sustainable approaches.
