Trade unions urge Kulbergs not to let Dombrava return as interior minister

Two trade unions are urging Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs not to give Janis Dombrava of the National Alliance charge of the interior sector when a new government is formed. The interior system employees' union is also opposed to the minister.

In Latvia, two trade unions have publicly called on Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs not to allow Janis Dombrava of the National Alliance party to lead the interior affairs sector again when the time comes to form a new government. The news was reported on 15 October by the portal LSM.lv.

A conflict of claims and accusations

According to LSM, the relationship between the unions and the minister is marked by a lack of dialogue, mutual claims and accusations of disloyalty. The trade union of interior system employees is also set against the minister, so the objections come from more than one side.

The dispute is being conducted in raised tones, although the sides are arguing in absentia rather than face to face. The issue matters because it concerns who will head the interior sector in the next government, a sector that includes the employees these unions represent.

The source does not specify what particular accusations have been made by each side, and it gives no response from Dombrava or the prime minister. A fuller account is available in a report on the LSM.lv programme "Let's Discuss in the Evening".
