More tech companies are building their own chips to reduce dependence on Nvidia
OpenAI, Google, Apple, and SpaceX are joining a trend of developing custom chips to lessen reliance on Nvidia's dominant position in the AI chip market.

Nvidia has long dominated the AI chip market, but the era of complete dependence may be ending. OpenAI recently shared plans to develop a custom inference chip called 'Jalapeño', built in collaboration with Broadcom. This joins Google, Apple, and SpaceX, which are already developing their own chips to mitigate single-supplier risk.
The goal is not a clean break from Nvidia but rather a diversification strategy. Custom silicon offers more control, hardware tailored to specific needs, and performance gains similar to what Apple achieved after transitioning from Intel chips.
This topic was discussed on a recent episode of TechCrunch's 'Equity' podcast, where hosts Kirsten Korosec, Anthony Ha, and Sean O'Kane analyzed the impact of the custom chip trend on the industry and highlighted several notable deals of the week.
