Financial rules force Villa's summer sell-off, leaving Emery to rebuild

Aston Villa have sold several key players this summer to comply with Uefa and Premier League financial regulations, leaving manager Unai Emery to reshape the squad. The club remains hopeful that Emery's experience can guide them through the upheaval.

Aston Villa's extensive squad turnover this summer stems largely from financial necessity rather than choice. The club must adhere to Uefa's squad cost ratio, which caps spending on wages, transfer fees and agent fees at 70% of football-related revenue. Villa have already been fined twice for breaching these rules — £9.5m last year and £19.4m in June, part of which was suspended following a settlement with Uefa.

The Premier League's outgoing Profit and Sustainability Rules, now being replaced by a system aligned with Uefa's model, also capped allowable losses. Villa's latest accounts to June 2025 showed a £17m post-tax profit, but the two prior years recorded substantial losses.

Over the past two seasons, Villa have raised more than £200m through player sales, including Jhon Duran, Douglas Luiz, Jacob Ramsey and Moussa Diaby. This transfer window, once the Ezri Konsa deal completes, is set to bring in around £212m in total.

Despite the departures, optimism persists at the club. Captain John McGinn pointed out that Villa have retained their manager and structure while several rivals have appointed new coaches this season. The club has also strengthened its squad with new signings and secured the registration of 17-year-old striker Brian Madjo following a dispute with Fifa.

A former Villa executive told BBC Sport that pressure on Emery is significant, but his experience is seen as the club's greatest asset as it navigates this difficult period of transition.
