A US Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bomber crashed near Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert of Southern California shortly after takeoff. Preliminary reports indicate that all eight crew members onboard are presumed dead, according to a social media post by the base.

Aerial images show the aircraft is almost completely destroyed. The crash occurred around 11:20 a.m. local time, with black smoke rising from a large charred area near the runway. Emergency vehicles were seen at the scene. The base was closed, and all incoming flights were diverted to other airfields. Non-commercial visitor passes were suspended to allow the base to focus on emergency response operations.

The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, first introduced in 1955, is a long-range bomber capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons. It has been used by US forces in conflicts from Vietnam to Iran. Edwards Air Force Base is a key center for aircraft testing and development, housing the 412th Test Wing, which tests all Air Force aircraft, weapon systems, software, and components. It was at this base that test pilot Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in 1947.

Aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti, who previously investigated crashes for the FAA and NTSB, suspects a flight control system malfunction due to the crash occurring so soon after takeoff. He suggested possibilities such as incorrect control settings after maintenance, an engine failure, or a malfunction of test equipment. Guzzetti noted that test flights are inherently riskier than routine flights, requiring specially trained test pilots and additional safety protocols. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
