US Boxer Hannah Rapp Killed in Texas Cycling Accident, Suspect Arrested

Hannah Rapp, a 26-year-old American boxer who challenged for the World Boxing Council women's featherweight title in June, died on Saturday after being struck by a car while cycling in Texas. The Brazos County Sheriff's Office reported that Rapp was riding with another cyclist on a local road when a driver, later identified as 31-year-old Charles Medina, passed them, stopped, and reversed his vehicle, hitting Rapp. She was pronounced dead at a hospital after emergency responders arrived. Medina was arrested on a manslaughter charge, defined under Texas law as recklessly causing a person's death. The sheriff's office described the case as isolated and under active investigation.

Tributes poured in from the boxing community. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman expressed heartbreak, calling Rapp an exceptional boxer and an invaluable member of the boxing family. Tiara Brown, who defeated Rapp by unanimous decision in their June title fight, posted on social media that Rapp was the best dance partner she had ever faced as a pro and that it was an honor to share the ring with her.

Rapp, originally from Yorktown, Indiana, had a professional record of eight wins (five by knockout) and one draw in nine bouts before her title challenge against Brown. Medina remained in custody Sunday morning; his bond had not been set. Jail records revealed prior arrests for deadly conduct by discharging a firearm, assault causing bodily injury, and reckless driving, but dispositions for those cases were not immediately available. If convicted of manslaughter, Medina faces two to 20 years in prison.
