US says it 'took action' against IRGC units threatening shipping in Strait of Hormuz
US Central Command said American forces carried out a limited and precise operation against Iranian Revolutionary Guard units that had planted mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran called the strike an act of aggression.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that American forces carried out "limited and precise measures" against units of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which had been planting mines and creating a threat in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement posted on X, CENTCOM said Iran had created the threat, and American forces removed it to protect civilian sailors, commercial shipping, and the free flow of global trade.
The US military command rejected the IRGC's characterization of the American strikes as an "act of aggression," calling the Iranian statement false.
Background
The action follows a strike on Sunday, when American forces hit Iran's Larak Island near the Strait of Hormuz for the first time in more than a month. Iran subsequently attacked US forces in Jordan.
A few days earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told several foreign counterparts that Washington did not plan new strikes on Iran in the near term, but intended to focus on other means of pressure instead.
