Voting has begun in the United States in the midterm elections, in which millions of Americans are choosing the makeup of Congress, the country's legislature: the House of Representatives and one third of the Senate. The result will determine which party controls the legislative branch going forward. The news was reported by the Ukrainian outlet European Pravda.
How voting is unfolding
The first polling stations opened in the north-eastern state of Vermont at 5:00 a.m. Eastern time, which is 12:00 in Kyiv. At 6:00 a.m., polls open in Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Virginia. The last stations open in Alaska and Washington at 11:00 a.m. Eastern time, and in Hawaii at 12:00.
The first polling stations close at 6:00 p.m. Eastern time, or 1:00 a.m. in Kyiv. The first results are expected at that point.
What is at stake
Voters are electing 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 members of the US Senate, as well as 39 state governors. More than 57 million Americans have already cast ballots early or by mail.
Forecasts
Preliminary forecasts indicate that the Democratic Party will win a majority in both chambers of Congress. European Pravda, in its own analytical piece, examines what a probable Republican defeat in the congressional elections would change.
