Washington and Tehran have both indicated they do not intend to extend a memorandum of understanding they signed with each other, which was meant to achieve peace in the Middle East conflict within 60 days. The document was signed in June of this year, and its deadline is now approaching without any visible breakthrough.

The stance taken by both sides suggests that a process originally designed as a path toward resolving the conflict has effectively stalled. Neither the United States nor Iran has so far shown willingness to continue negotiations under the existing agreement, meaning the diplomatic channel established two months ago could soon lose its force.

Threats instead of dialogue

The situation raises concerns that neither a peace agreement nor even meaningful progress toward one can be expected in the near term. Both sides continue to exchange threats, reflecting persistent tension and a lack of trust between Washington and Tehran.

The signing of the memorandum in June was seen as a significant step, as it represented a formal agreement between the two countries after a long period of confrontation. However, as the deadline nears without concrete results, it is becoming increasingly clear that the path to a settlement will be longer and more complicated than initially hoped.

Should the memorandum not be extended, it could mark a return to the harsher rhetoric that previously characterized relations between the two sides, further delaying any chance of a lasting resolution to the regional conflict.
