US conducts new airstrikes on Iranian military targets
The US military has carried out new airstrikes against Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets in Iran, in response to Iranian attempts to attack merchant ships and US forces in the region. President Trump warned Iran of much harsher and broader strikes if it retaliates.
The United States Armed Forces have carried out a series of new airstrikes against targets belonging to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The attack was a response to Iran's attempts to attack commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and US military positions in the region.
According to Iranian state media, explosions were heard on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz and in the southern port cities of Bandar Abbas and Chabahar. Radio Free Europe reported this, citing a Central Command post on X.
President Donald Trump said the attack was a response to Iranian attempts to lay naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that Tehran would face much harsher and more extensive attacks if it struck back.
On September 1, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran was ready to immediately resume implementation of the peace memorandum if the United States returned to compliance with the agreements reached in Islamabad.
On August 31, the US struck two IRGC launch systems on Iran's Larak Island. The IRGC reported dead and wounded servicemen and civilians. Iran also reported an attack on Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, where US troops are stationed.
Earlier, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced new sanctions on Iran's banking sector and the IRGC's overseas assets, mentioning bank accounts in the British Virgin Islands. He also said Washington would impose secondary sanctions on any company or individual with economic ties to the Iranian regime. Iranian authorities called this economic terrorism.
