Cancelled Pitbull Concert in Riga: How to Get Refunds for Tickets and Extra Costs?

The cancellation of the Pitbull show in Riga has left many fans disappointed and out of pocket. People had booked accommodations, purchased airline tickets, planned travel, and incurred other costs related to the event. The law office of sworn attorney Lauris Klagišs provided clarification on consumer rights in such situations via social media.

Regarding the ticket itself, the situation is straightforward: according to the Consumer Rights Protection Law (PTAL), if the service is not provided, the consumer is entitled to a full refund. Platforms like Biļešu Serviss act only as intermediaries; the responsibility for refunds lies with the event organizer. Typically, the money is automatically returned to the same account.

Recovering additional expenses is more complex. The Civil Law (Articles 1770 and 1779) states that losses must be compensated, but to do so through court, four conditions must be proven: the organizer's unlawful action, fault, actual losses (receipts, bank statements), and causality. In practice, this is difficult, as organizers often include disclaimers in the terms and conditions stating they are not responsible for additional costs. However, Article 6 of PTAL prohibits unfair contract terms, so such disclaimers can be challenged.

If the concert was cancelled due to force majeure (e.g., natural disaster), liability is excluded. However, if the reason is technical problems or organizer errors, it is not force majeure, and consumers can claim damages. Experts advise keeping all evidence of expenses and, if necessary, taking the matter to court.
