Returning to one's homeland after many years abroad often seems straightforward – pack a suitcase and go home. But in practice, many returnees face emotional complexities. Researchers at the University of Latvia (UL) have created the first conceptual model that explains not only the stress caused by return migration but also the psychological processes and resources that help overcome this experience.

The study reveals that return migration causes significant stress related not only to practical matters but also to identity reconstruction and a sense of belonging. The researchers identified several psychological resources that help manage this experience, such as social support, flexibility, and a positive attitude.

The model was developed based on interviews with returning migrants and covers both emotional stages and factors that promote successful reintegration. UL emphasizes that this is the first step toward understanding and supporting people who return to Latvia after a long period abroad. The research could serve as a basis for future practical solutions, such as counseling programs.

Importantly, the model not only describes difficulties but also highlights opportunities – how people can help themselves and how society can support the return process. This is especially relevant in Latvia, where many emigrants consider returning but often encounter unexpected obstacles.

The work of UL researchers is a significant contribution to migration psychology and may inspire similar studies in other countries. Returning home is not just a physical move but also an emotional journey, and this model helps to understand it more deeply.
