Back to roots: Kurzeme family raises rabbits, chickens, goats and welcomes tourists
After a decade in Riga, Maija and Tom Zilberts have returned to the Lejaskroki homestead near Tukums, restoring the grandparents' house and keeping 150 rabbits, 130 hens, and 23 goats. The family also hosts tourists and participates in local community events.

Maija and Tom Zilberts moved back to the Lejaskroki farmstead in the Tukums region after living in Riga for ten years. Together with their four children, they are renovating Maija's grandparents' home and building a farm that has become both their new lifestyle and source of income.
Their farm currently houses 150 rabbits, 130 chickens, and 23 goats. Animal husbandry is a key part of their operation, but the family is also exploring other ventures. They welcome tourists, offering a glimpse into rural life, and actively engage with the local community. They regularly take part in the Home Cafe Days, where visitors can taste their homegrown products.
The Zilberts have become deeply involved in the Matkule parish, collaborating with other locals and promoting tourism in the region. Sharing their story on Latvian Radio, Maija and Tom emphasized that their return to the countryside was a conscious decision, providing not only income but also a closer connection to nature and traditions.
Restoring the Lejaskroki homestead is an ongoing process, but the family pursues it with great enthusiasm. They hope their example will inspire others to return to rural areas and create sustainable farming practices.
