Updated Nissan Qashqai with e-POWER: 4.3–4.5 L/100 km Consumption

Japanese carmaker Nissan has fitted its updated Qashqai crossover with a third-generation e-POWER system, in which an electric motor drives the wheels and a petrol engine acts as a generator. The model costs from 34,590 euros, and a full tank can cover up to 1,200 km.

Japanese carmaker Nissan is offering its updated compact crossover Qashqai with a third-generation e-POWER drive system. It is a hybrid-type technology in which an electric motor propels the car while a petrol engine only generates electricity. According to a test by the Latvian auto outlet iAuto.lv, a full tank can take the car up to 1,200 km.

How the system works

In the e-POWER version, a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo engine works as a generator, while the wheels are turned solely by an electric motor in all driving conditions. As a result, the outlet says, the driver feels no turbo lag or gear changes, and the petrol engine is not audible at city speeds. The engine uses very low-viscosity 0W16 oil, which improves efficiency. Unlike the manufacturer's X-Trail model, the Qashqai E-Power is available only with front-wheel drive.

Figures and price

Fuel consumption is 4.3–4.5 litres per 100 km. Output reaches 205 horsepower, and acceleration to 100 km/h takes 7.6 seconds. This is the quickest current Qashqai variant, as the 1.3-litre engine version needs more than nine seconds. Nissan claims the car has also become quieter.

The price starts at 34,590 euros with a discount. The outlet notes that the cabin is practical and well thought out, and that the car drives like an ordinary one, although structurally it is an electric vehicle that never has to be plugged in.

The technology matters because Nissan is using it to compete with Chinese manufacturers' hybrids in the mainstream crossover segment.
