Funeral service ATVADAS reports threats after opening branch in Jelgava
After opening a branch in Jelgava, funeral service provider ATVADAS says it has faced threats and attempts to pressure its clients, but states it will continue operating in the city.
Funeral service provider ATVADAS opened a branch in Jelgava this year, aiming to give local residents an additional option when choosing funeral services. The company says that from its very first days of operation it encountered resistance from competitors in the city.
According to ATVADAS, a person visited the branch shortly after it opened and aggressively objected to the company operating in Jelgava, reportedly threatening physical violence if it continued doing business there. The company has not disclosed who made the threat.
Later, the company says, an unidentified person contacted one of ATVADAS's clients by phone, criticizing the choice to use the company's services and claiming the client had been overcharged. ATVADAS says it remains unclear how the caller obtained the client's phone number and details about their choice of funeral provider, raising concerns about privacy protection.
The company points out that its website publicly lists prices for both service packages and individual cost items, a level of transparency it says is not standard practice in the funeral industry.
ATVADAS says it will continue operating in Jelgava, arguing that competition in the sector should be based on price, quality and professionalism rather than pressure placed on people coping with the loss of a loved one.
