German carmaker Audi intends to invest $4.2 billion in building its first plant in the United States. US President Donald Trump announced the plan on Saturday, and the company confirmed it. The project is significant because the factory will be set up in a market where carmakers face US import tariffs.

Jobs and timeline

Audi said the new factory will create roughly 4,500 jobs. Construction in the state of Georgia is due to begin next month, while production is planned to start at the beginning of the next decade.

Situation at the parent company

Audi's parent company is the Volkswagen group. It is dealing with several difficulties: customs tariffs introduced by the US, fierce competition from Chinese carmakers and weak demand in Europe.

In September, Volkswagen agreed with trade unions to cut up to 100,000 jobs by 2030. This is described as the largest restructuring ever seen in the global car manufacturing industry.
