Supreme Court delivers final verdict in case of ceiling collapse at Jūrmala secondary school 12 years ago
The Senate of the Supreme Court of Latvia has made a final ruling in the criminal case regarding the collapse of a suspended ceiling at Jūrmala Pumpuru Secondary School in 2014, where children were only minutes away from being injured.
Twelve years ago, a dangerous incident occurred at Jūrmala Pumpuru Secondary School when a newly installed suspended ceiling collapsed along approximately 20 meters of the corridor. Students were saved from injury by mere minutes, as the ceiling fell just after they had passed through the area.
The prosecutor's office launched a criminal investigation against two suspects: an architect and a building supervisor. They faced criminal charges and a potential fine of up to 10,000 euros each. In a separate case, the company responsible for the ceiling installation and one of its employees were also charged.
The case made its way through all levels of the judicial system and ultimately reached the Senate of the Supreme Court of Latvia. The Senate has now issued its final decision, putting an end to the prolonged legal proceedings. Further details of the ruling have not been disclosed.
