First H5N1 Case in NSW

New South Wales has confirmed its first case of the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu strain. The infection was detected in a giant petrel found at Hawks Nest, north of Newcastle. This is the sixth confirmed case in Australia, with a seventh bird from Mullaloo Beach in Western Australia also being tested.

NSW Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty stated that the infection has not spread to wild birds or commercial poultry. Surveillance using drones and ground personnel has been increased, and poultry producers have been urged to heighten biosecurity measures.

Political Developments at NSW Labor Conference

On the second day of the annual NSW Labor conference, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese criticized the rightwing parties, labeling them an 'axis of grievance'. He argued that the Liberals, Nationals, and One Nation are engaged in a 'race to the bottom', opposing fairness, workers, and aspiration.

Albanese defended the government's changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax, stating that no one denies the housing market was broken. Some local branch motions call for further reforms, including removing grandfathering arrangements for investors.

A committee report on Australia's role in the world, discussing the Middle East and endorsing the Aukus agreement, will not be debated today. However, negotiations continue on motions to repeal protest laws.

The conference aims to project unity ahead of next year's state election, though tensions between left and right factions remain.
