Glenn Maxwell, the 38-year-old Australian all-rounder, has announced his retirement from international cricket. He will continue to play T20 for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, Australia's domestic T20 competition.

His last appearance for Australia came earlier this year against Oman at the T20 World Cup. He bowled three overs of off-spin, finishing with figures of 2-13, and did not need to bat.

Records and highlights

Maxwell hit five T20 international centuries, a record he shares with India's Rohit Sharma. He is also one of only five Australian men to score a century in all three international formats, along with Shane Watson, David Warner, Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh.

His best-known innings came at the 2023 50-over World Cup, when he made an unbeaten 201 from 128 balls against Afghanistan while dealing with injury. Australia recovered from 91-7 to chase down a target of 292. In the same tournament he struck the fastest World Cup century, from 40 balls against the Netherlands. His double hundred was at the time the second-fastest in one-day internationals, but it now ranks fourth.

Maxwell won the 50-over World Cup with Australia in 2015 and 2023, and hit the winning runs when Australia took the T20 World Cup in 2021. He retired from one-day internationals in June last year.

A farewell that did not happen

On the Final Word podcast, Maxwell said he had held a small hope of a send-off game at the MCG in Melbourne, but fully understood the direction of the T20 squad. He said there would be a lot of change over the next 12 to 24 months with the 2028 Olympics approaching, and that the team needed to look at young players and expose them to international pressure.

In total, across 286 international matches (149 ODIs, 130 T20Is and seven Tests), Maxwell scored more than 7,000 runs and took 136 wickets.
