Metal Spheres Washing Up on Australian Beach Identified as Space Junk

Six metallic spheres, each about twice the size of a basketball, washed ashore on Forrest Beach in Queensland, Australia. Authorities say they are likely pressure vessels from a rocket – space debris – and pose no danger.

Over the weekend, six metallic spheres appeared on Forrest Beach in Queensland, Australia, sparking speculation and alien-themed jokes. The objects, each roughly twice the size of a basketball, were secured by hazmat-clad fire crews who established a 50-meter exclusion zone.

The Australian Space Agency stated that the spheres are likely pressure vessels from a foreign rocket that recently re-entered Earth's atmosphere. "The Agency has identified the likely source. The objects' location and characteristics are consistent with debris from a foreign rocket body," the statement said. Officials are working with international partners to confirm the exact launch vehicle and country of origin.

Police confirmed the objects pose no danger but warned residents not to handle any further debris. The fire department noted that more spheres could wash up in the coming days.

Local businesses leaned into the alien narrative with humor: a supermarket jokingly urged panic buying after the "UFO crash," and a takeaway shop began selling a "space junk snack box" with an alien-themed image.

Flinders University space archaeologist Alice Gorman told The Guardian that the spheres resemble titanium pressure vessels commonly used in rockets. She noted they are among the most common types of intact rocket debris to survive reentry, and the lack of scorching suggests they may have separated at a lower altitude. Gorman added that professionals often call them "space balls."

This is not Oceania's first encounter with such debris. In 1972, titanium spheres from the failed Soviet Kosmos 482 mission fell on New Zealand farmland, causing even greater confusion – one sphere was locked in a police cell over fears of radioactivity.
