New Memorial Gallery

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese opened the new atrium and Anzac Hall at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra on Wednesday night, dedicated mainly to Australia's commitments in the Middle East, Afghanistan, and peacekeeping operations. Speaking to attendees, including outgoing Chief of the Defence Force David Johnston and incoming Chief Mark Hammond, Albanese emphasized the power of "lest we forget" and vowed to keep the flame of memory burning brightly for future generations.

Housing Prices and Budget

Meanwhile, frontbencher Tanya Plibersek called for calm over falling house prices, reiterating Treasury estimates that prices will grow 2% slower in the long term. She noted that most people do not buy and sell homes immediately, and slower growth will help young people enter the market.

Tax Reforms and NDIS

The Labor government secured a deal with the Greens to pass its bill on negative gearing and capital gains tax, but the Greens remain firmly opposed to reforms to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Greens Senator Nick McKim said his party would fight the bill with every tool available, having secured an eight-week delay and some amendments to remove the worst elements. McKim argued the reforms would harm disabled Australians by withdrawing desperately needed supports.
