Buying Car Parts Online: Why Prices Differ and How to Choose the Right One

A guide from the online retailer TRODO explains why seemingly similar car spare parts cost different amounts. Its main advice is to select the specific vehicle in the catalogue first and only then compare prices.

A guide published by TRODO, an online car spare parts retailer, explains how to make sense of price differences between parts and what to consider when buying for a repair. The material suggests starting a price comparison not with the price filter but with the choice of the specific car model and engine in the catalogue.

One category, very different products

A single category can contain a part costing about ten euros next to another manufacturer's product priced two or three times higher. That alone does not mean the cheaper part is poor or the pricier one better. Shock absorbers are given as an example: the catalogue includes front and rear units, different designs and manufacturers. For one car a particular rear shock absorber may cost around 20 euros, while a front one for another car from a different manufacturer may cost more than 60 euros.

Price is shaped by materials, construction, coatings and manufacturing processes. In addition, one brand may have several product lines with different positioning.

What to check before buying

Before choosing, the guide recommends establishing:

  • whether the part fits the specific car exactly;
  • whether the manufacturer is known and the specification is clear;
  • whether the kit includes everything needed for installation;
  • whether a higher-grade product makes sense for the particular repair;
  • how much of the total repair cost is the part and how much is labour.

If replacing a part takes several hours of work, saving ten or twenty euros on the component is not necessarily the deciding factor.

Kits and vehicle selection

A wheel bearing kit may include a nut, a retaining ring and other fitting parts, while another package contains only the bearing. The same goes for timing belt, chain, clutch and suspension kits. A more expensive kit can be more practical, but if diagnostics show only one part is needed, a full kit is unnecessary.

Searching by name alone can return hundreds or even thousands of products for different cars. Once a vehicle is selected, OE numbers, dimensions, installation position and manufacturer can be compared. Product images should not be fully trusted either, as visually near-identical parts can differ by a few millimetres, in connector shape, thread or mounting side.

The guide concludes that a good purchase means the correct part at a reasonable price, not simply the lowest price.
