Autumn Sensory Bin for Kids: What to Use From What You Have at Home

A children's sensory bin can be assembled from rice or beans and autumn finds, with no purchases. The guide stresses safety, especially for children under three.

Families with young children can make an autumn sensory bin: a container filled with loose material and small objects for a child to dig through and play with. According to a guide published by the Latvian outlet Zemgales Ziņas, it can be put together from things already at home or picked up on a walk, without buying anything.

Container and materials

Any low, wide container works: a plastic storage box, a large bowl or a baking tray. Rice or dry beans are the simplest filler. An old sheet under the container helps keep grains from spreading around the room.

Dry leaves, pine cones, chestnuts and acorns give the bin its autumn feel. Leaves are best gathered in dry weather from clean ground, since damp leaves quickly turn moldy indoors. Pine cones can be rinsed and dried before use. Leaves with moisture, flies or mold should be left out. Spoons, small cups, a sieve and a deep mug are useful for pouring, sifting and "cooking soup".

Getting started

The first time, it is better to offer less: a container, one filler and a few items. If the child just pours the grains back and forth, that is normal, and another item can be added next time.

Safety

Beans, acorns and small cones can be swallowed by children under three, and grains are sometimes pushed into the nose or ear, so an adult should stay nearby. If it is unclear how a child reacts to beans, peas or nut shells, it is better not to use them; leaf dust and mold can also trigger reactions. If the child starts putting grains in their mouth, the bin should be taken away.

Storage and cleanup

The bin is best kept under a bed or at the bottom of a wardrobe with a lid, so the grains are out of reach of younger siblings and pets. Clean, dry rice can be stored in a jar; if it is wet or dirty, it should be thrown out. Leaves and cones can go to the compost, and the container can be washed as usual.
