US long-range missile stockpiles depleted in Iran war, sources say
The United States has reportedly used up most of its long-range missile reserves during the war against Iran, raising concerns about readiness for future conflicts with Russia or China. The White House insists Washington still has far more ammunition than any other country.
The United States has significantly depleted its long-range missile stockpiles during military operations against Iran, according to sources in the US administration cited by Reuters. The remaining reserves are now raising concerns about the US military's preparedness for possible armed conflicts with Russia or China in the future.
The report focuses mainly on ATACMS long-range ballistic missiles and the newer Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM), which are designed to replace them. Sources did not disclose exact numbers of missiles expended. PrSM is described as an improved next-generation weapon with greater range, and each missile costs more than one million dollars.
Reuters also reported, citing an anonymous source, that the US has consumed nearly half of its Tomahawk cruise missiles stored at military bases around the world and launched from warships and submarines. In addition, the inventory of defensive weapons has fallen significantly, including interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems and THAAD anti-missile systems.
According to data from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), cited by Reuters, from February to July 2026 the US expended roughly 65 percent of its Patriot missiles, while THAAD stocks decreased by at least 38 percent. Two sources confirmed that these figures match internal US administration information.
President Donald Trump, however, dismissed concerns about dwindling weapons supplies. The White House said the US possesses far larger ammunition stockpiles than any other country in the world and that its supply exceeds current needs.
