An employee of the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) from Bauska was involved in a crash while on duty, in which a service vehicle was damaged and the rescuer himself was injured. Available information suggests alcohol may have been a factor in the circumstances of the crash, though further details about exactly what happened and why have not been made public.

Normally, when a firefighter or rescuer is injured while performing official duties, they are entitled to state-funded treatment as well as a corresponding benefit for the workplace injury. This is part of the social guarantees granted to emergency service personnel, who work daily in high-risk conditions.

An unexpected turn

In this particular case, however, events took an unexpected direction. A dispute arose between the injured rescuer and the state over the incident and its consequences, one that was not resolved through simple administrative procedure but instead turned into a lengthy and complicated legal process.

The dispute between the Bauska VUGD employee and the state ultimately reached the courts, with the case being reviewed by three separate court instances before reaching a resolution. This indicates that the disagreement between the parties was serious, and that the question of whether — and to what extent — the employee was entitled to compensation and covered treatment was not straightforward to settle.

The specific outcome of the court ruling and any further developments in the case are not currently known.
