Latvia Enhances Protection of Energy Facilities Amid Fear of Russian Provocations

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs said in a Reuters interview that Latvia is stepping up security at energy sites, including the Inčukalns gas storage and a hydroelectric plant, due to potential Russian provocations. He also called on NATO to improve air defense, increase troop presence, and integrate anti-drone systems developed with Ukraine.

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs stated in a Reuters interview that the country is enhancing the protection of energy infrastructure in response to possible Russian threats. He specifically mentioned increased security at the Inčukalns underground gas storage, the energy sector, and a hydroelectric plant.

Kulbergs referred to intelligence warnings from Western countries indicating that Russia might plan provocations and attacks on infrastructure in the region. He also announced that during a conversation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, he requested the alliance to bolster air defenses and increase the number of troops in Latvia. Additionally, the Prime Minister asked for the rapid integration of anti-drone systems developed by Latvia in cooperation with Ukraine into NATO's defense structures.

According to Kulbergs, Russia is struggling in the war in Ukraine and its leadership seeks a quick victory, making the potential hybrid threat greater than ever. The Latvian government is also preparing for possible Russian interference in the parliamentary elections scheduled for October.

Kulbergs criticized EU member state Bulgaria for blocking the 21st sanctions package against Russia, which includes restrictions on 250 individuals and entities and Russia's liquefied natural gas sector. He emphasized that vetoing parts of the sanctions means being complicit in the deaths of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians. He added that inaction against Moscow's shadow fleet of tankers and LNG sales fuels Russia's war machine, with some countries profiting from it, forcing a choice between money and peace.
