BBC broadcaster Jeremy Vine has shared a personal rundown of the songs that have marked key moments in his life, in an interview with the Guardian.

He recalls falling for a fellow sixth-former named Sarah at school, an unrequited crush that ended with a single kiss at an end-of-term party. He returned home at dawn and played the Psychedelic Furs' "Love My Way" repeatedly as his adult life began.

Karaoke and parties

For karaoke, Vine points to REM's "Losing My Religion," which he says once cleared out a bar in the US, though he thinks Eminem's "Stan" might now suit him better since it only requires singing one note. As for the best party song, he names Mary Mary's "Shackles (Praise You)," recalling a dance with Rylan Clark that left him feeling, in his words, "arthritic" next to Clark's moves.

Songs that hit deeper

Vine says he knows every word to Kenny Rogers' "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town," a song about a man left paralysed by the Vietnam War. Conversely, he can no longer bring himself to listen to Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi," saying its message about environmental destruction feels too close to reality. He also confesses a secret fondness for Barry Manilow's "Mandy," despite calling it melodramatic.

He names David Bowie's "Sound and Vision," first heard at age 12, as the song that changed his life, while Joan Baez's "Diamonds & Rust" is the one that makes him cry. For his own funeral, Vine says he'd want Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" performed live.

Vine is scheduled to appear at BBC Radio 2 in the Park, taking place in Stirling's City Park on 11 and 13 September.
